Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the refractive and visual results, security and predictability of posterior segment lens ICL V4C (Staar®) implantation to treat moderate to high myopia.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital de Braga, Portugal

Methods:

Inclusion criteria: Patients undergoing posterior segment lens V4C for treating myopia with 12 and 24 months of follow-up and normal pre-operative ophthalmologic examination. Exclusion criteria included those with insufficient follow-up time, ICL V4B lens implantation for treating hyperopia, secondary procedures to previous anterior segment surgery (namely intracorneal segments or LASIK) and patients with keratoconus. The following parameters were assessed; visual acuity (uncorrected and with correction), sphere, cylinder, spherical equivalent, central vault, central endothelial counts and induced astigmatism vectorial count.

Results:

33 eyes of 19 patients were included following ICL V4C lens implantation for correcting myopia and astigmatism. Mean age was 30,39 ±7,37 years old. Pre-operative sphere and cylinder power was -5,90±4,24 D and -1,29±1,45 D, respectively; post-operative sphere and cylinder power was 0,11 ±0,32 D and -0,46 ±0,33 D, respectively. Refractive predictability was high: 88% ±0,50 D and 100% ±1,00 D; Efficiency ratio was 1,00 and security ratio was 1,14; All patients kept or registered higher best corrected visual acuity lines. There was a mean endothelial loss of 2.06% at 12 months and 3.30% loss at 24 months of follow-up. Mean central vault at 24 months was 539,24 ±327,98 μm. No cases of cataract or intraocular hypertension were registered

Conclusions:

Posterior segment lens ICL V4C implantation is an effective and safe procedure for treating moderate to high ametropies.
