The effect of implantable collamer lens on corneal, internal and total aberrations of the eye

Abstract Details


To evaluate the changes after Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation on high order aberrations (HOA) of the eye.

30 eyes of 18 patients were included in this study. Refraction, HOAs (corneal, internal and total) were measured (iTrace, Tracey) pre and 3 months postoperatively. Dependent samples T-Test (SPSS, IBM) was used to disclosure differences in the results.


An dependent samples t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between spherical equivalent (t = -26,902, df = 29, p < .00001). Postoperative SE (M = -10.21, SD = 1.89) reported significantly lower than preoperative SE (M = 0.73, SD= 0.77). Statistical analysis revealed another significant improvement on HOAs RMS values. HOAs were analyzed as Corneal, Internal and Total. The difference between total HOAs (t = 3.82, df = 29, p < .0006) and internal HOAs (t = 2,89, df = 29, p < .0005) were significant. There was no significant change found on cornel HOAs as expected. The total HOAs decreased 0.15 (SD= 0.09) to 0.09 (SD=0.03) and internal HOAs decreased 0.16 (0.08) to 0.1 (SD=0.05).


Statistical outcomes showed that ICL implantation not only corrected the refractive error but also decreased internal HOA and total HOAs of the eye.
