Abstract Details

Purpose:

To develop a better criteria for ICL size determination in eyes with small cornea.

Setting:

Hankou Aier Eye Hospital, Wuhan, China

Methods:

A retrospective study. From the measurements of ICL vaulting one year after implantation, we observed the vault tends to be lower than desired in eyes with smaller cornea. Based on this finding, we chose the size of the lens 1 step larger than that was calculated by the manufacturer’s recommendation if the patient had a cornea smaller than 11mm, crystaline lens thicker than 4mm and anterior chamber deeper than 3mm. The results were evaluated 1 year after surgery by OCT measurement of ICL vault.

Results:

Thirty-six eyes in 18 patients had ICL implanted uneventfully and followed up for more than 1 year. The mean lens vault was 486 +/- 161 microns 1 year after surgery. The vault of lower than 200 microns occured in 2 eyes, and of 800 microns or higher occured in 2 eyes. No eyes had valting lower than 100 microns or higher than 900 microns .

Conclusions:

The current manufacturer’s guideline for ICL sizing seems to undersize the lens for eyes with small corneas. Adjustment is needed.
