Abstract Details

To evaluate the efficacy of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) eye drops as the only line of treatment for post-surgical epithelial defects.

Research Institute of Ophthalmology, (RIO) Giza, Egypt

39 patients with post-surgical epithelial defects. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) eye drops for the treatment of post-surgical epithelial defects 6 times a day and follow up for 6 weeks. Main outcome measures: Increase in best spectacle corrected visual acuity as measured by Snellen charts, decrease in fluorescein staining and observation of the symptoms after treatment.

47% of patients of post-surgical epithelial defects improved at least 1 line of best corrected visual acuity. Subjective symptoms improved in 97% of the cases with. A decrease or disappearance of corneal fluorescein staining was observed in 70% of the patients.

Autologous platelet-rich plasma showed to be capable of being the only line of treatment and to be an effective therapy in the treatment of post-surgical epithelial defects.
