Abstract Details

To present an extremely rare case of a corneal melanoma.

1st Department of Ophthalmology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AHEPA Hospital, Greece

An 84 year-old female patient presented to our Department with a pigmented lesion on the cornea of right eye (OD), 6x4mm, complaining of mild pain in OD and inability of complete eyelid closure. The tumor was increasing in size during the previous year. She had undergone OD cataract surgery three years before, followed by an unspecified postoperative complication. The visual acuity was 3/10 (OD) and 9/10 (OS). A and B-scan and ophthalmic evaluation didn’t reveal any other pathology. The pigmented lesion was surgically removed and the patient followed a protocol of topical chemotherapy.

The surgical removal of the lesion was uncomplicated, as was the postoperative period. Her visual acuity improved to 6/10 three months after surgery. The histologic examination revealed malignant melanoma.

Treatment of corneal melanoma consists of surgical removal and postoperative topical chemotherapy. Postoperative follow up is mandatory.
