Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the performance of intraoperative aberrometry in comparison with the preoperative biometry using IOL Master.

Setting:

David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, University Eye Hospital Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany, Charlottenklinik Stuttgart, Germany

Methods:

This study was performed using the intraoperative aberrometer I-O-W-A (Eyesight&Vision, Germany). After cataract extraction, measurements of the aphacic eyes were performed. The outcome was compared with the biometric data suggested by the IOL Master (Haigis formula). Furthermore, the reliability of the intraoperative measurement was compared with the postoperative subjective refraction.

Results:

In total, 116 eyes were included. In general, we found excellent agreement between intraoperative aberrometry and the expected aphakic refraction from the preoperative biometry. The deviation of aphakic intraoperative spherical equivalent was in 92%/76% within the range of ±1dpt/±0.5dpt from target refraction, in contrast to 88%/76% for the IOL Master.

Conclusions:

The strong correlation between intraoperative aberrometry and biometry suggests the reliability of the presented method to verify the proposed IOL during surgery.
