Abstract Details

To establish the frequency of pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFS) and glaucoma (XFG) in patients recruited for cataract surgery and to determine connection with pupil dilation, lens nuclear hardness, and age.

Clinic of ophthalmology, Clinical Centre Kragujevac, Kragujevac, Serbia

This study evaluated eyes referred for cataract surgery between June 2015 and Decembre 2015. Pseudoexfoliation material was detected in the eye with detailed slit lamp examination in mydriasis. Preoperative reached mydriasis was measured by pupile chart. Lens Opacities Classification System III was used for estimating nucleus hardness. Diagnosis of glaucoma was based on intraocular pressure measuring, direct fundus examination, computed perimetry.

Of the 462 eyes (393 patients) evaluated, 128 (27.7%) were pseudoexfoliation was detected, and among them 46 (9.95%; 35.93%) were diagnosed as XFG. Our results indicated that older population was statistically significant in pseudoexfoliation group, especially in XFG group (p<0.05; p<0.001). Also, we noticed that in younger populatuion 9 of them had PEX. Hard nuclear cataract was statistically significant more presented in th XFS and XFG group (p<0.001, p<0.05), than in group without PEX. Pupile diameter was statistically significant smaller in the PEX group than in non PEX group (p < 0.001).

Pseudoexfoliation are more common in older population, but today it can be presented with significance in younger population, Detailed slit lamp examination must be undertaken for every patients recruited for cataract surgery. Hard cataract with small pupile is main characteristics of the patients with PEX.
