Abstract Details

There are currently many surgical techniques available for the management of pterygium. Those include bare sclera resection and pterygium excision with conjunctival autografting or amniotic membrane transplantation. We present a simple technique to enable attachment of the autograft with the use of fibrin glue

King's College Hospital london

Retrospective study of 89 consecutive pterygium operations. In our proposed technique we glue the part of the autograft nearest to the limbus first, by folding back a small part of the graft at the limbus and applying the sealant protein onto the bare sclera at the limbus and the setting solution onto the folded autograft. Once the limbal part of the autograft is attached it is easy to position and attach the rest of the graft.

There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications.

We feel that our technique avoids excessive use of fibrin glue as it is more controllable and also leads to a better aesthetic result as the graft is already preplaced on the conjunctival defect and the folding action leads to better apposition
