Abstract Details

Recurrent pterygium management is a difficult proposition with no clear cut protocols available. This study evaluates the efficacy of conjunctival autograft (CAG) alone & CAG with amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) & mitomycin C (MMC) in treatment of recurrent pterygium.

Tertiary eye care centre, Disha Eye Hospitals in Eastern India, from July 2010 to June 2015

Retrospective, Comparative, Interventional case series. 52 cases underwent CAG alone (Group A). 25 cases (Group B) with multirecurrence, advanced & double headed recurrence were subjected to CAG with AMT & MMC. 25 cases (Group C) were kept only under observation. Follow up was 9-36 months.

Recurrence rate was 13.46% seen in Group A, and 24% in group B. Observation group remained stable. Cases in Group B were more high risk patients & had higher complications.

Conjunctival autograft alone also can give acceptable results in recurrent pterygium. Cases with multiple surgeries, advanced recurrence & double headed recurrence are complicated and prone to high recurrence despite undergoing conjunctival autograft, amniotic membrane transplantation and mitomycin C application.
