Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the degree of concordance between the measurements obtained with IOL Master 500® (biometer based on Michelson interferometry) and IOL Master 700® (biometer based on optical coherence tomography -OCT-).

Setting:

Clínica Rementería, Madrid, Spain.

Methods:

We performed a prospective study of 100 consecutive eyes that underwent cataract surgery. A complete preoperative examination was performed, including biometry based on interferometry (IOL Master 500®) and biometry based on OCT (IOL Master 700®). We compared the measurements of axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), keratometry (K1 and K2 readings) and horizontal white-to-white (WTW) distance obtained with both devices. We also evaluated and compared the intraocular lens (IOL) power calculated with both biometers.

Results:

Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was moderate between IOL Master 500® and IOL Master 700® for AL (ICC=0.73; P=0.05) and high for ACD (ICC=0.88; P=0.01), K1 reading (ICC=0.96; P=0.001), K2 reading (ICC=0.98; P=0.001) and horizontal WTW distance (ICC=0.91; P=0.001). In 52 eyes (52%) the IOL power calculated with both devices was similar; in 26 eyes (26%) IOL power obtained with IOL Master 500® was 0.50 diopters higher than the value obtained with IOL Master 700® and in 22 eyes the IOL power estimated with IOL Master 500® was 0.50 diopters lower than the IOL power with IOL Master 700®.

Conclusions:

Our study suggest that the measurements obtained with IOL Master 500® and IOL Master 700® show a high agreement for the calculation of pseudophakic intraocular lenses.
