To assess Evaluation, Reliability and Comprehensiveness of the information on YouTube videos related to Age-related macular degeneration (AMD).


XXXIV CONGRESS of the ESCRS , 10-14 September. 2016, Bella Center, Copenhagen, Denmark.


YouTube was scanned in November 2015 using the key words “Age-related macular degeneration “without any filters. Videos were classified as useful, misleading, or irrelevant. The contents were assessed for reliability and comprehensiveness, each on a 5-point scale based on DISCERN criteria.


60%of videos were classified as useful, 35% misleading, and 5% irrelevant. Videos were assessed as 60% partially Reliable, 35% Unreliable, 5% Reliable. Content’s Total Videos were organized as 70% partially comprehensive, 15% Comprehensive, 15% Incomprehensive.


You Tube videos are influential educational materials available for patients, Authoritative sources should use popular social media websites to help guide and educate the patients to ensure best outcomes and to avoid misinformation, potential risks and complications.
