Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare SIGS with trabeculectomy over a two year follow up period.

Setting:

Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital, Chennai, India

Methods:

A retrospective non-randomized comparative study carried out at Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital, Chennai, India to compare SIGS with trabeculectomy

Results:

Trabeculectomy group (control, n=23) was compared to SIGS group (study, n=30). In study group, there was significant change in IOP over the time period from preoperative to 24 months (Friedman Test=0.000) in the SIGS. . There was no significant variation in the postoperative IOP (p=0.719). In control group, there was significant change in IOP over the time period from preoperative to 24 months (Friedman Test=0.000) and there was no significant variation in the postoperative IOP (p=0.096). The mean percentage reduction in IOP in control group was 36.9 mmHg and in study group was 46.6 mmHg.

Conclusions:

SIGS is comparable to trabeculectomy but ease and speed of surgery are more and complications encountered are less.
