Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the influence of cataract surgery in anterior chamber depth (ACD), iridocorneal angle (ICA) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with and without associated glaucoma.

Setting:

Instituto de Oftalmologia Dr. Gama Pinto (IOGP), Lisboa

Methods:

Prospective study of 70 patients who underwent cataract surgery in Instituto de Oftalmologia Dr. Gama Pinto (IOGP) during August - December 2015. Patients were divided into two groups: a group of patients with the diagnosis of glaucoma (open angle and narrow angle) and a control group composed of patients without glaucoma. A preoperative and postoperative evaluation of ACD and ICA was performed by using Visante OCT and a preoperative and postoperative IOP measurement of 1 month was made using Goldmann tonometry. The collected data were analyzed using biostatistical tests.

Results:

Were analyzed and compared the values of the variables of the study obtained preoperatively and 1 month postoperatively. There was a significant increase in ACD and ICA and a significant decrease of IOP in the group with glaucoma, compared to the control group.

Conclusions:

The Visante OCT is a non-contact exam, which provides excellent high-resolution images of the anterior segment, allowing the quantification of ACD and ICA quickly and accessibly. With the results of this study it was found that cataract surgery contributes significantly to an increase in ACD and ICA and to a decrease of IOP, and may be important in the control and treatment of glaucoma.
