Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effectiveness of Venturi pump system in femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery(FLACS).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Asan Medical Center

Methods:

FLACS was performed in 38 eyes with Venturi-pump phaco machine (AMO Signature®). All nucleus were fragmented into multiple cube with 4 radial axis. Conventional cataract surgery was performed in 53 eyes with Venturi-pump. We evaluated phacoemulsification parameters including total used irrigating fluid volume, total phaco time and average phaco power and effective phaco time (EPT). To compare with peristaltic pump system, we used previous study data.

Results:

In comparison of phacodynamic parameters, significant reduction was found in average phaco power and EPT (p=0.000, 0.004) in FLACS compared with conventional group performed by Venturi machine. Dividing each group into 2 subgroups according to nucleus sclerosis(nucleosus ≥4), all the parameters were lower regardless of nucleus grading in FLACS with Venturi-pump. (nucleosus≥4, EPT 4.19±2.91s(FLAC), 9.60±7.14s(Conventional phaco), nucleosus<4, EPT 0.60±0.55s(FLAC), 3.01±2.15s (Conventional phaco), p= 0.003, 0.000 respectively) In the peristaltic pump system(previous study), the cumulative dissipated energy in FLAC had only significant lower value in hard nucleus.

Conclusions:

Femtosecond Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS) requires less phaco energy & less phaco time regardless of nucleus sclerosis grading in Venturi phaco machine. FLACS seems that more effective in Venturi system comparing with Peristaltic pump system.
