Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the emotional impact of this kind of surgery in the two phases ( Femto laser procedure and Phacoemulsification procedure) on the same patient through an estimate of his autonomic response to a potentially stressful event (stress reaction)

Setting:

Centro Diagnostico Italiano, Milan, Italy

Methods:

50 cataract patients eyes were operated with Femto cataract surgery in topic anaesthesia under or equal to 70 years old.To study the autonomic response to a potentially stressful event of 50 patients through the measurement of blood pressure Humeral (PAO), Heart Rate (HR) and arterial O2 saturation (SpO2) measurement performed by a specialist in anesthesia during the various stages of the surgery; In addition, during the different phases of the procedure, the patient will be given a numerical scale (from 1 to 10) to allow him to define his emotional experience and degree of anxiety.

Results:

The statistical analysis of the data shows a significant increase of: 1) Maximum arterial pressure in all the various stages (p<0,05) but overall during the pre Phacoemulsification phase (p<0,001) 2) Heart rate (p<0,001) in respect to the starting values. 3) O2 Saturation during the pre Phacoemulsification phase (p<0,05) in respect to the starting values 4) Self-assessment stress during pre Phacoemulsification phase (p<0,05) in respect to the starting values.

Conclusions:

1.The Femto-laser phase seems to be lesser emotional impact on patients with respect to the phase of phacoemulsification, in our practice, even this procedure it is. 2.The only topical anesthesia does not seem to be enough to dominate the stress reaction
