Abstract Details


To report the ocular manifestations of the Chikungunya virus during the epidemic of this disease in the Dominican Republic that affected 760,000 people.


The epidemic of Chikungunya Virus affected most countries in Latin America in the period of 2014-2016. This study is reporting the ophthalmologic manifestations of the virus in the ophthalmology centers and public hospitals of the Dominican Republic.


There was a registry of the Hospitals in the Dominican Republic in the tertiary care level with all seropositive cases were reported by the ophthalmology department.


The most frequent ocular manifestation was keratitis, sicca, reactivation of herpes simplex and anterior uveitis. There were also cases with neuroretinal disease and orbital myositis. The disease manifestations clinically with the classic triad of fever rash and arthritis.


The epidemiologic study has confirmed the ophthalmologic findings published in the literature from the Indian epidemic of 2008. The neuro ophthalmologic manifestations and herpes virus reactivation is a relatively new clinical presentation.
