Abstract Details

To report a case of infectious keratitis in a patient with keratoconus secondary to PRK + Cross linking.

Hospital Moises Broggi Sant Joan DespĂ. Barcelona

Case report

A 21-year-old female, diagnosed with Keratoconus, was referred to our department for ophthalmic evaluation and treatment. The patient was treated with PRK + Cross linking on her left eye (Athens protocol) following our standard protocol for keratoconus. After correct ephiteliazation the patient came with a decrease in visual acuity without other symptoms showing a Salzmann-like epithelial scarring which was treated with bandage contact lens and 0.4% hyaluronic acid drops. After parcial resolution the patient came again with redness but without pain showing a corneal infiltrate with new desephitelialization, the patient admited an episode of dirty manipulation of the bandage contact lens. The culture was positive to Streptococcus oralis.

The microbial keratitis responded to sensible antibiotics according to the culture and resoved, but the cornea developed severe central corneal scar which was elected to corneal transplantation
