Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the clinical findings, refractive and visual results of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) techniques in keratoconus: Big-bubble versus manual dissection

Setting:

Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital

Methods:

Fifty-eight eyes of 51 patients with severe keratoconus were treated with one of the two surgical techniques manual DALK (n = 24); big-bubble DALK (n = 34). The main outcomes measured were visual acuity, refractive status, corneal topographic parameters, corneal thickness and endothelial cell density (ECD). Patients were examined postoperatively at 6 months, 12 months and 6 month after suture removal.

Results:

Mean age was similar in both groups. After surgery, visual acuity improved significantly in both groups.Postoperative ECD was similar in both groups at all intervals, with no statistically significant differences

Conclusions:

Manual dissection and big-bubble techniques in DALK were similar visual results. Big bubble technical implementation of the integrity of the descement membrane layer was considered to be safer.
