Abstract Details

To evaluate the stability of conjunctival autograft fixation with autologous blood in pterygium excision surgery

De Gironcoli Hospital, Conegliano, Italy

Twenty eyes affected by a primary nasal pterygium underwent excision in association with conjunctival autograft from the superior bulbar conjunctiva to cover the scleral bed. The conjunctiva flap taken was thin, Tenon-free and with the inclusion of limbal stem cells. After the alignment, the graft was placed over the blood film in the bare area, and the edges were held with forceps, usually for three to five minutes, to give adequate time to occur the graft fixation. Six month of follow-up was performed and data included conjunctival graft stability (graft loss, graft retraction), pterygium recurrence and intra/postoperative complications

Partial graft loss occurred in one patient only and it was partially resected on the 3rd post op day. No graft retraction occurred and at six month post operatively we had not any pterygium recurrence

Conjunctival autograft fixation with autologous blood resulted stable in adherence, very well accepted by patients and promising good results in long-term outcome and recurrence
