Abstract Details

To evaluate the efficacy of corneo-conjunctival autografting in surgical management of primary and recurrent pterygium.

Ophthalmology department, Minia University, Egypt.

The study included 420 eyes in 370 patients; Females (127) and males (243). 72 were recurrent pterygia. All underwent corneo- cunjunctival autograft transplant surgery from April 2009 to March 2014. Average follow up period was 12 months.

Recurrence during the follow up period was seen in one patient (0.002%). Graft donor site healed promptly without excessive scarring in all cases. Two patients had graft retraction on nasal side and were successfully managed conservatively. One patient had tenon's granuloma which was removed surgically. No patient complained of pain during first week after surgery except that they had mild discomfort. No major complication such as infection, graft necrosis.

The corneo-conjunctival autograft transplantation is an effective new treatment for management of both primary & recurrent pterygia and preventing its recurrence.
