Abstract Details


To treat adenovirus conjunctivitis with povidone iodine solution 0.1% eye drops.


Ophthalmology Clinic- Blida, Algeria


A retrospective study on patients with clinical signs of adenovirus conjunctivitis, all were treated with a preparation of povidone iodine dillued with balanced salt solution at the concentration of 0.1% ; at the dose regiment of 4 drops a day for 7 days, with a follow up visits at D0, D3 ;D7, and D15, at D3 for patients with severe conjunctival inflammation we added fluorometholone eye drops 4 drops a day till D7; the family of the patients who presented the same symptoms before and treated by other treatment were the control group (56 patients).


94 patients were treated , all had clinical signs of adenovirus conjunctivitis, with a concept of contagion, all did not recieved any ocular treatment at least one month before consultation, at D3, 67% of patients had a significant decrease of clinical signs, for those who had a residual inflammation , steroids eye drops were added, and at D7 all the patient shows a significant improvement of signs, at D15 we didn’t observe any corneal infiltration, in the control group, we observed 52% of corneal infiltrations.


Povidone iodine solution may be a very interesting treatment in adenovirus conjunctivitis.
