Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze changes in tear osmolarity, Non-Invasive Keratograph Tear Breakup Time (NIKBUT), tear meniscus height (TMH) and a average bulbar redness (BR) measured by Keratograph 5M (K5M) after treatment with multi dose preservative free eye drops of sodium hyaluronate 1 mg/ml four times a day during a week in dry eye patients.

Setting:

15 patients (30 eyes) were studied with a mean age of 42.68 years. They had abnormal Schirmer I test and/or tear breakup time under 10 seconds. All of them belonged to the Ocular Surface Unit of Virgen Macarena and Virgen del RocĂo Hospitals (Seville, Spain).

Methods:

Patients discontinued any topical treatment and the use of contact lenses at least 2 hours before the visit. Each subject underwent a baseline ophthalmologic exam including tear osmolarity measured by TearLab test and a study of the ocular surface by Keratograph 5M that evaluated NIKBUT first, average NIKBUT, TMH and average BR. One week later, same examination was repeated after treatment with multi dose preservative free eye drops of sodium hyaluronate 1 mg/ml four times a day.

Results:

Mean values before and after treatment were: 295.87 (10,729 SD) and 299,74 (14,949 SD) for osmolarity, 7.4739 (5,04724 SD) and 7.0539 (4.74986 SD) for NIKBUT first, 11.7530 (5,47221 SD) and 10.1630 (4.39273 SD) for average NIKBUT, 0.2738 (0.2531 SD) and 0.2479 (0,080 SD) for TMH, 1.3958 (0,6382 SD) and 1.2879 (0,5909 SD) for average BR. No statistically significant differences were found for none of the variables, p=0.160, p=0.274, p=0.738, p=0.119, p=0.213 respectively.

Conclusions:

Treatment with multi dose preservative free eye drops of sodium hyaluronate 1 mg/ml four times a day during one week does not cause significant changes in tear osmolarity or NIKBUT, TMH and average BR by K5M in dry eye patients. Increasing sample size, intensifying treatment and/or prescribing it longer may lead to obtaining these differences.
