Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare self-filled OSDI questionnaire score with interviewed OSDI questionnaire of K5M score in a sample of patients with LSCD

Setting:

We studied LSCD patients diagnosed according to Dua clinical criteria belonging to the Ocular Surface Unit of Virgen Macarena and Virgen del Rocio Hospitals (Seville, Spain).

Methods:

38 patients (76 eyes) were analyzed with a mean age of 54.63 years. Every patient was instructed to self-fill out the OSDI questionnaire. On a subsequent visit, an ocular surface examination by K5M was performed and patients underwent OSDI questionnaire by a trained interviewer. Both questionnaires have a similar text, however OSDI K5M questionnaire results more dynamic and interactive thanks to direct communication between interviewer and patient so that the method of collecting information is substantially different. Both tests scores means were analyzed and an intraclass correlation coefficient was applied subsequently generating a Bland-Altman plot to show data distribution.

Results:

Mean values were 47.5 (25,8 SD) for self-filled OSDI and 47.3 (27,5 SD) for K5M OSDI. No significant differences were found between them. The intraclass correlation coefficient result was 0.72 which indicates a good agreement between both questionnaires. Bland-Altman plot showed that measures were distributed between the average and two standard deviations following a linear pattern.

Conclusions:

Self-filled OSDI questionnaire and K5M OSDI questionnaire are equivalent for measuring ocular surface symptoms in patients with LSCD.
