Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyse the use of implanting a single piece intra ocular lens under saline in manual small incision cataract surgery

Setting:

Tertiary eye care centre

Methods:

To analyse and describe the technique of using a simcoe cannula through the main section of a manual small incision cataract surgery to place a single piece intra ocular lens in the bag.

Results:

The fluid coming from the simcoe cannula maintains adequate formation of the capsular bag and anterior chamber while the IOL is inserted.

Conclusions:

The hydroimplantation technique has the advantage of increased efficiency, reduced surgical time and cost, no need for OVD removal from behind the IOL or for additional instrumentation, no OVD-induced intraocular pressure elevation postoperatively, and no risk of early capsular bag distension syndrome.
