Abstract Details

Purpose:

To quantitatively compare efficacy of subtenon 20-mg triamcinolone injection with dexamethasone 0.1% eye drop in controlling intraocular inflammation after uneventful phacoemulsification

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology Siriraj hospital, Mahidol University Bangkok, Thailand

Methods:

Patients who undergone uneventful phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation were randomly received subtenon 20-mg triamcinolone injection with 0.3% tobramycin eye drop (TA group) or a combination of 0.3% tobramycin/ 0.1% dexamethasone eye drop (Dexa group) as postoperative medication. The visual acuity, intraocular pressure, anterior chamber inflammation score, laser flare-cell metering, and central foveal thickness were evaluated at 1, 7, 14, 28 and 90 days postoperatively.

Results:

The study included 140 eyes from 140 patients. There was no significant difference in demographic data between groups. At 1 month postoperatively, there were 87 patients (62.1%) in TA group compared with 78 patients (55.7%) in Dexa group (p=0.59) who had grade 0 anterior chamber inflammation score. Repeated measure ANOVA for visual acuity (p=0.57), anterior chamber cell (p=0.13), and flare (p=0.08) demonstrated no statistical difference between both groups. The intraocular pressure in TA group was significantly higher than Dexa group at postoperative day 90 (14.03 vs 11.34 mmHg, p=0.012) but no statistical difference from baseline (13.97 mmHg)

Conclusions:

A single subtenon 20-mg triamcinolone injection is effective in postoperative inflammation control for uneventful phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation.
