Abstract Details

To study the refractive outcome of implantation of Rayner T-flex toric IOL in cases with 5.0D or more astigmatism at the lens plane

Scarborough hospital, Scarborough, UK

In a retrospective study, 17 eyes with 5.0D or more astigmatismat lens plane received Rayner hydrophilic T-flex IOL following uneventful phacoemulsification. This lens is available from +1.0D to +11.D cylinder. It has anti-vaulting haptics for rotational stability and exact centration. The steep axis was marked in sitting position using pendulum device and the axis mark on the lens was aligned accurately on table. The patient was refracted at 1 month and residual cylinder and its axis was measured. Unaided and aided vision was tested. The patients were asked to rate their visual outcome as highly satisfied, satisfied or not satisfied.

13 out of 17 eyes received 5.0D (Group 1) while 4 eyes received 6.0D (Group 2) cylinder correction with T-flex IOL. Group 1 had residual cylinder of 0.0D in 6, 0.5D in 3, 1.0D in 1 and 1.5D in 2 eyes. Group 2 had residual cylinder of 0.0D in 2, 1.0D in 1 and 1.5D in 1 eye. Group 1 and 2 had unaided vision of 20/40 or better in 11 and 3 eyes, corrected vision of 20/20 or better in 13 and 4 eyes respectively. 11 patients in Group 1 and 4 in Group 2 were highly satisfied.

Rayner toric T-flex IOL was found to be highly effective in correcting high cylinder of 5.0D or more. The residual cylinder was within acceptable range. As regards visual outcome, 15 out of 17 patients were highly satisfied and the remaining 2 were satisfied.
