New hydrophobic acrylic aspheric toric IOL implantation in patients with corneal astigmatism and cataract

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluating the effectiveness and safety of new toric one-piece acrylic aspheric toric IOLs in patients with a combination of cataract and corneal astigmatism of 0.75 to 2.5 diopters.

Setting:

Methods:

The study included 55 patients (62 eyes) with a combination of cataract and corneal astigmatism. All patients underwent cataract phacoemulsification with implantation of toric IOLs Hoya (Japan) The patients were divided into groups according to three IOL models - 351T3 (n = 30; 48.4%), 351T4 (n = 24; 38.7%) and 351T5 (n = 8; 12.9%). The primary endpoint of the study believe achieving BCVA 1.0 2 months after surgery. To assess the quality of the correction of astigmatism we used vector analysis of astigmatic correction according to N. Alpins. Average follow-up was 9,9 ± 1,2 (6-34) months.

Results:

Primary endpoint of the study was achieved in 46,3% eyes (n = 25), the deviation in BCVA ±0.1 was observed in 6 patients (11.1%). value of ca decreased from -1,71±0,44 to ± 0.7 diopters -1,58, the lens astigmatism -1,94±0,58 to -0,87±0,22 diopters, the refractive spherical component - from -3,06±3,87 to ± 0.99 diopters -0,34 at the end of the observation period. Targeted astigmatism vector in magnitude (-0.65) and the axis (93.0) was as close as possible to the actual post-operative vector (-0.73 and 91.5, respectively). Index correction averaged 1,12±0,22, which indicates some initial overcorrection of astigmatism. IOS index was 0,25±0,2. In 28 of 54 cases (51.2%) was IOS index ≤0,1, and 13 in (24.1%) - from 0.1 to 0.25.

Conclusions:

New one-piece toric IOL provide high stability and good functional outcome in patients with a combination of corneal astigmatism and cataracts. BCVA 1,0 ± 0,1 at the end of the observation period is reached in 57.4% of the investigated cases. The frequency of IOL repositioning, posterior capsule fibrosis and other intra- and postoperative complications after implantation of the new hydrophobic acrylic aspheric toric IOL is not exceeding than other IOL models.
