Abstract Details

Purpose:

Surgery of noncompensated glaucoma within patients with pseudophakia is a complex procedure required special skills and experience.PURPOSE is to estimate short-term and long-term results of Ahmed valve implantation among patients with pseudophakia.

Setting:

Saint Petersburg multi-field hospital, Russia

Methods:

Observation group consisted of 192 patients (38-86 years old) with pseudophakia. In 107 of all cases, the valve implantation preceded by the sinustrabeculectomy. During surgery was used the standard method of Ahmed valve implantation with obligatory posterior sclerectomy. All patients observed in 1 week and in 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and 36 months after the surgery.

Results:

In early postoperated period serous choroidal detachment developed in 44 of all cases (23%), hemorrhagic detachment – in 1 case (0,5%). Late choroidal detachment occurred in 2 cases (1,04%). Hypertension phase emerged in 32 cases (16,6%) and was operated by excision of capsule around the valve. Endothelial decompensation emerged in 5 cases (2,6%). Maybe it caused by inconstant contact of tube with cornea. Valves exposure registered in 7 cases (3,6%). Explantation caused by ineffective repeated valves coating executed in 4 cases (2%). In result, surgery was successful in 81% of all cases.

Conclusions:

In 81% of all cases was achieved steady normalization of intraocular pressure with preservation of visual functions. Implantation of Ahmed valve among patients with pseudophakia can considered effective method of glaucoma surgical treatment.
