Contrast sensitivity evaluation after posterior capsulorhexis in pseudophakic patients

Abstract Details


To evaluate and compare the quality of vision and contrast sensitivity in pseudophakic patients after phacoemulsification with posterior capsulorrhexis or without.


Experts eye center , Cairo, Egypt.


30 patients ( 60 eyes), were divided into two equal groups. Both groups underwent uneventful phaco emulsification to remove cataract using Infinity machine of Alcon. Both groups were implanted with aspheric single piece hydrophobic IOL (Alcon IQ). In thirty eyes, 3mm posterior capsulorrhexis were performed using special technique to prevent anterior vitreous opening. Cases were evaluated, one week, one month, 6 months, and one year postoperative. Contrast sensitivity tested with best corrected distance visual acuity under mesopic conditions at different spatial frequencies, using the CSV- 1000 contrast sensitivity testing


there was no significant change in both BCVA and contrast sensitivity in the 30 eyes group in which posterior capsulorrhexis performed. There was non-significant decrease in BCVA in the group in which posterior capulorrhexis was not performed. Significant decrease in contrast sensitivity at spatial frequencies 12 cpd with (p < 0.05) and 12cpd(p<0.01). observed in this group at 12 months follow up.


The BCVA and contrast sensitivity remained unchanged in the group in which posterior capsulorrhexis was performed. While a significant reduction in mesopic contrast sensitivity occurred in the other group at special frequencies 12cpd and 18 cpd after one year.
