Abstract Details

Purpose:

Establish correlation the IOP variation and the axial length in patients undergoing phacoemulsification with its age and the maturity of the cataract.

Setting:

Unidad Oftalmologica Kennedy Norte, Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Methods:

Observational study. Performed on 104 eyes undergoing phacoemulsification. Measurements were taken before and one month after surgery. IOP was taken with Oculus Corvis, axial length with IOL Master and structures of the anterior chamber with Pentacam. Correlation between the change in IOP and axial length with age and maturity of cataract were evaluated .

Results:

The mean age was 67,2 years. The mean presurgical IOP was 15,30mmHg and its variation of -5.38 ± 2.47 mmHg. The axial length 23.30 mm with an mean variation of -0.11 ± 0,33mm. Predominant were nuclear cataracts (80.8 % ) grade 3 by LOCS classification. The chamber angle , depth and volume of the anterior chamber increased. Correlation between IOP variation with age and cataract maturity was found different between the different cataract groups according to increasing age.The variation of the axial length is not affected by the maturity of the cataract but among age groups.

Conclusions:

There is a variation of the IOP and the axial length after phacoemulsification . There is a correlation between the change in IOP with patients age and maturity of the lens. There is a correlation between the variation of the axial length with the age but it isn't found with the maturity of the cataract.
