Abstract Details

We would like to present a case of an uneventful Right phacoemulsification surgery in a 79 years old male patient with bilateral anterior capsular schisis.

The operation was performed at Moorfields at Bedford, NHS Foundation Trust Hospital

We have imaged the anterior segment (AS) pathology by several modalities such as OCULUS Pentacam, AS-Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and AS color photography. An uneventful phacoemulsification was carried out where capsulorhexis was performed with special attention. Due to coexisting small pupil Healon GV and intracameral phenylephrine were used.

This is the first case to our knowledge where bilateral anterior capsular schisis is documented with no conventional background (for example; Pseudoexfoliation and an occupational history as a glassblower) and a routine cataract surgery.

We present a unique case to the ophthalmic literature with the potential to inform the contemporary ophthalmic surgeon of a successful surgical outcome.
