Abstract Details

To evaluate in a long term observation the safety and effectiveness of a fully preloaded hydrophobic heparin coated single-piece intraocular lens - CT Lucia 601P (Zeiss Meditec, Germany) following phacoemulsification.

Borkenstein & Borkenstein, Fachärzte für Augenheilkunde und Optometrie, private practice, Kreuzgasse 35, 8010 - Graz, Austria

In this prospective study a total of 72 eyes of 47 patients aged between 57 and 89 years were enrolled. They underwent uncomplicated lens removal with implantation of the CT Lucia 601P. Control examinations including visual acuity (ETDRS), slit lamp exam, Sheimpflug measurement (Pentacam HR, Oculus) and wavefront aberrometry (iTrace, Tracey Technology) were performed in week 1, 4, 12 and 6 months after surgery.

The monocular and binocular performance for near and distance visual acuity was stable over the entire period. The effective lens position (ELP) measured with Pentacam HR did not change over the postoperative course of 6 months and there were no myopic shift or refractice surprises. The handling of the fully preloaded Accujet 2.0 injector was unproblematic and even in eyes with small pupils and use of Malyugin ring cery easy. The unfolding process of the lens worked in all cases without sticking of the haptics to the optic. The lens position evaluated in postoperative photographic examination (IM 900, Haag Streit) was steady centered.

This study demonstrates the safety and effectiveness of the CT Lucia 601P IOL. Our preliminary results show high patient satisfaction. We have not observed any complications or problems with this fully preloaded lens by now.
