Abstract Details

To image the space of Berger using intraoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) system and to use this view to assist in intraocular lens (IOL) implantation

Antwerp University Hospital

Three patients who were undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery were examined using the OCT system coupled to an operating microscope to provide real time images of the capsule and anterior vitreous structures.

The results of three patients are presented with two images of the Berger space and two of the ligament of Wieger. The intraocular lens is seen entering the space without disturbing the hyaloid face.

Previously unseen transparent structures of the eye can now be imaged intraoperatively using real time OCT. This technique provides information on the status of the posterior capsule, anterior hyaloid and the integrity of the attachments between the two.
