Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of conventional hydrodissection on the posterior polar and subcapsular cataracts.

Setting:

Universal Eye Center, Zhong-Li, Taiwan.

Methods:

The retrospective evaluation of conventional hydrodissection was performed in the posterior polar and subcapsular cataract. In the past one year, more than fifty posterior polar and subcapsular cataract patients were analyzed.

Results:

We performed hydrodissection in the all of posterior polar and subcapsular cataracts, and no posterior capsule rupture was noted during the hydrodissection and rotation of the nucleus.

Conclusions:

We believe that the posterior capsule in the posterior polar and subcapsular cataract is thin and weaker than a normal capsule. Gentler maneuvering of the steps will help avoid unnecessary downward pressure on the posterior capsule. Tiny amount of BSS hydrodissection can passed through the tight adherence of the polar opacity and the thin posterior capsule, which can minimize posterior capsule stress while performing the posterior polar and subcapsular cataract surgery.
