Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare capsulotomy circularity six months after femtolaser assisted cataract surgery procedure (FLACS) with two different femtolaser platforms: Alcon Lensx, and Abbott Medical Optics Catalys Precision Laser System.

Setting:

University Eye Clinic –Trieste. Retrospective cohort study.

Methods:

Twenty-one consecutive eyes of 19 cataract patients were treated with FLACS. Patients were randomized into two groups according to the femtolaser platform adopted: Group 1 (11 eyes)underwent LENSX FLACS while Group 2 (10 eyes) underwent CATALYS FLACS. Slit-lamp high definition capsulotomy pictures were taken six months after surgery. Anterior capsulotomy circumference was evaluated with an image analysis software and a circularity index was calculated for both groups.

Results:

Patients’ mean age was 76 ± 7 years (range 60-90). Group 1 circularity mean index was 0.987 ± 0.006 and Group 2 was 0.983 ± 0.009. No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups (p=0.257).

Conclusions:

Femtosecond laser systems performed circular and repeatable capsulotomies. The analysis of two different platforms showed regular anterior capsulotomy with similar circularity index six months after surgery.
