Abstract Details


The aim of this study was to evaluate comparatively dry eye signs and symptoms following FLACS and conventional PHACO.


This study was conducted at Garg Eye Institute and Research Centre, India.


In this retrospective double masked parallel study 80 patients of elective cataract surgery were enrolled and divided in 2 groups randomly.In one group FLACS was performed while in second group conventional PHACO surgery was done by standard PHACO ventori machine.All cases were operated by same surgeon.Postoperative dry eye markers were assessed on day 1, after one week,two weeks and four weeks.The dry eye parameter recorded in all cases were ocular surface disease index,tear film assay using corneal topography,Schirmer testing 1,fluorescein staining and subjective symptoms.


In both groups 34 and 36 patients developed dry eye post-operatively in FLACS group and normal PHACO group.The dry eye markers specially subjective symptoms and fluorescein staining scores were higher from baseline while tear BUT and schirmer testing 1 values decreased postoperative significantly at one week and remained higher to baseline at 4 weeks. OSDI score work greater in both groups. Fluorometry showed worsening of fluorescein staining at day 1,2 weeks and 4 weeks.In patients with predisposed dry eye symptoms in both groups.


In both groups the worsening of dry eye markers were recorded post operatively.Patients in both groups had a higher predisposition for fluorescein staining and dry eye symptoms.In our study both FLACS and conventional PHACO had the same ratio of risk of developing dry eye.
