Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effectiveness of combination therapy with Diquafosol sodium 3% and Hyaluronate sodium 0.1% for dry eye after cataract surgery.

Setting:

Two-hundred one newly diagnosed patients with dry eye syndrome received a combination treatment with Diquafosol 3% and Hyaluronate sodium 0.1%(Group I, 108 eyes) or a mono treatment with hyaluronat sodium 0.1%(Group II, 93 eyes) from 3 days before cataract surgery.

Methods:

Disease severity was measured at 1 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months by tear film break-up time (tBUT), corneal stain score, ocular protection index(OPI), dry eye symptom questionnaire (Ocular Surface Disease Index). Additionally, corneal wetting property(CWP) was measured during cataract surgery.

Results:

Both groups was improved in tBUT, corneal stain score, ocular protection index, OSDI over time(p<0.05). tBUT in Group I showed a significant increase at 1,2,3 months compared with Group II(p=0.017, <0.01, <0.01). Corneal stain score in Group I showed a significant improvement at 3 months compared with Group II(p=0.001). OSDI was significantly reduced in Group I at 1,2,3 months compared with Group II(p<0.01, <0.01, <0.01). But ocular protection index(OPI) was not significantly different between two groups(p>0.05). Corneal wetting property was also not significantly different between two groups(p=0.061).

Conclusions:

Combination treatment with Diquafosol 3% and Hyaluronate sodium 0.1% can also be an effective treatment for dry eye after cataract surgery.
