Abstract Details

Purpose:

To propose an alternative strategy, and to determine the safety and efficacy of intracorneal antibiotic endophthalmitis prophylaxis after cataract surgery.

Setting:

Clinica de Ojos. Maracaibo - Venezuela.

Methods:

400 patients with a diagnosis of cataract undergoing phacoemulsification and IOL implantation underwent injection of intracorneal cefuroxime (1mg/0.1ml) at 3 and 9 o’clock at the end of cataract surgery. Corneal deturgescence was assessed by pachymetry and optical coherence tomography (OCT) control before the surgery at 24, 48 and 72 hours

Results:

We had no cases of endophthalmitis or adverse reaction to the intracorneal medication in the patients studied with a follow up period of 2 years.

Conclusions:

The administration of intracorneal cefuroxime showed to be a safe and alternative strategy for prophylaxis of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery.
