Abstract Details

To compare concentration of 2% ganciclovir eye drop versus 0.15% ganciclovir eye gel in aqueous humor at 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours after topical administration

Siriraj hospital, Mahidol University

Healthy volunteer undergoing phacoemulsification or extracapsular cataract extraction was randomly applied with 2% ganciclovir eye drop or 0.15% ganciclovir eye gel 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours before the operation. Aqueous humor was aspirated at the beginning of cataract surgery. Mass spectrometry was performed to determine the concentration of ganciclovir in aqueous humor.

Forty patients were included. Twenty of them were randomly received 2% ganciclovir eye drop while the others got 0.15% ganciclovir eye gel. Mean aqueous humor volume, the concentration of ganciclovir, and drug half-life were determined.

Aqueous humor concentration of 2% ganciclovir eye drop may be comparable with 0.15% ganciclovir eye gel at specific time points. This may be useful in the treatment of intraocular herpes virus infection.
