Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe 12 cases associated with Medennium posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (MPL) implantation for correction of consecutive hyperopia after previously performed radial keratotomy (RK).

Setting:

“Blue Eye” Centro di Chirurgia Oculare, Milano, Italy, “International Center for Ophthalmology”, Moscow, Russia

Methods:

We reviewed 12 eyes (6 patients) with RK incisions undergoing MPL implantation. Bilateral RK was performed 21-26 years ago. Refractive errors ranged from +4.25 to +6.0 diopters (D). The mean follow-up period was 15.16±8.44 months. Autorefractometry, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), optical biometry, intraocular pressure (IOP), OCT Visante, corneal endothelial cell (CEC) loss were measured.

Results:

The mean SE changed from +5.75±3.21D to +0.42±0.82D. The UCVA improved from 1.0±0.29 (log MAR) to 0.16±0.15. BCVA changed from 0.16±0.25 to 0.11±0.16. The mean distance between Crystalline lens and MPL was 382,44±91 µm. No statistically CEC induced by the MRL implantation. No cataract, glaucoma, inflammation or progressive hyperopic shift was observed.

Conclusions:

MPL implantation may be an alternative surgical option for the correction of hyperopia after RK.
