Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate clearance changes of phakic IOL (Visian ICL, STAAR Surgical) induced by rotation of the ICL of 90 degrees.

Setting:

Clinical study Smile Eyes Eye Clinic Munich Airport

Methods:

Retrospective analysis of implanted ICLs in the period from 2012 - 2016. Surgeries were performed at two different centers by two surgeons (MB / DK). Cases of ICL hypervault with subsequent surgical ICL rotation from horizontal to vertical position were identified. Posterior clearance (distance between ICL and crystalline lens) was assessed before and after rotation by performing Pentacam imaging (Oculus).

Results:

Of 543 implanted ICLs, 6 eyes showed postoperative hypervault > 900 microns. ICL rotation of 90 degrees from horizontal into vertical position was performed without any complications. Average vaulting was 1042 microns before and 683 microns after rotation leading to an average vault reduction of 359 microns.

Conclusions:

Our data demonstrate hypervault reduction of ICL by rotation of the ICL from horizontal into vertical position. This technique can be an alternative to ICL exchange in cases of non-toric ICL implantation and postoperative hypervaulting.
