Abstract Details

Purpose:

Report postoperative results for cataract eyes with ≥1.5D astigmatism after surgery and toric monofocal intraocular lens.

Setting:

Private clinical ophthalmology practices

Methods:

Retrospective clinical cases study in eyes ≥1.5D astigmatism after cataract surgery and toric monofocal intraocular lens (TIOL).Recorded variables included: visual acuity (VA) uncorrected (UC) and best corrected (BC) decimal scale, spherical equivalent (SE), subjective sphere, astigmatism(diopters;D), and axis. Orbscan topography astigmatism, keratometry (SimK). Biometry (IOLMASTER 500 Carl Zeiss, MEDITEC) astigmatism, Km and IOL and CASSINI ( i-Optics, The Hague, the Netherlands) anterior astigmatism, Km, axis, surface regularity index (SRI) and surface asymmetry index (SAI). Results calculated with Microsoft Excel 2013; mean, standard deviation (SD). Statistical analysis performed with t-student and Pearson correlation (R) (p≤0.05 significance).

Results:

Data from 32 eyes/ 3.6±2.8 month mean follow-up. Mean pre and post operative results, respectively, were: UCVA 0.17±0.12; 0.68±0.16 (p=0.00), BCVA 0.52±0.23; 0.80±0.11 (p=0.00), SE -0.90±2.2D; -0.13±0.33D (p=0.17), Sphere 0.77±2.4D; 0.15±0.26D (p=0.40), subjective astigmatism 3.1±1.4D; 0.34±0.80D (p=0.00), axis 92.1±0.62; SimK 42.3±62.6D (p=0.00). Compared to subjective astigmatism, other values were: biometric 3.1±0.88D (p=0.12), topographic 3.2±1.1D(p=0.48), CASSINI 3.4±1.2D(p=0.48), and TIOL 4.0±1.4D (p=0.00). R between different astigmatism values : IOLMASTER/topography R= 0.84 (p=0.00), IOMASTER/ CASSINI R= 0.37(p=0.37), and topography/CASSINI R=-0.14(p=0.7). R for TIOL astigmatism were: CASSINI/TIOL R= -.83 (p=0.01), IOLMASTER/TIOL R=0.93 (p=0.00), topography/TIOL R= 0.50 (p=0.08). Mean SRI y SAI were:2-0±1.1 and 5.1±3.6, respectively.

Conclusions:

Postoperative improvement were significant for subjective astigmatism, axis and VA improvement. CASSINI and IOLMASTER astigmatism correlated significantly with that in the IOLT.
