Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the subjective and objective visual outcomes of AMO Tecnis Multifocal Toric Intraocular lenses (IOL) for distance and near vision after implantation.

Setting:

Study design – prospective, observational, non comparative case series Study place – Rajan Eye Care Hospital, Chennai, India Sample size – 20 eyes

Methods:

Patients with significant cataract and 1-3D of corneal astigmatism, who desire to be spectacle free for distance and near vision underwent phacoemulsification with implantation of AMO Tecnis multifocal toric IOL. All patients underwent a full ophthalmological examination including uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), corrected near visual acuity (CNVA). IOL power and alignment was calculated on manufacturer's web-based program. Suitable lenses were selected to neutralize both sphere and cylinder. Postoperatively, UDVA, CDVA, uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), CNVA, contrast sensitivity, IOL position, any complications and patient satisfaction using a validated questionnaire was analyzed at 1 month.

Results:

Pre-operative refractive sphere ranged from -8.75D to +3.25D and refractive cylinder was 1.41±0.91D. Mean spherical power of IOL implanted was 20.90± 2.43D and mean cylindrical power was 2.33± 0.75D. Post-operative UDVA was 0.045±0.08D and UNVA was 0.305±0.02D. Post-operative refractive sphere was 0.05±0.22D and cylinder was 0.15±0.27D. Residual refractive astigmatism of -1 D or less in 100% eyes. Contrast sensitivity levels were 90% or more in 100% eyes. Spectacle independency for distance and near was achieved in 100% eyes. All eyes were within ±5֯ of intended axis, no IOL required secondary repositioning. There were no intra- and post-operative complications.

Conclusions:

Implantation of Multifocal Toric Intraocular lenses in patients with significant preoperative astigmatism provided excellent uncorrected distance and near vision, rotational stability, safety and predictability allowing patients to achieve spectacle independence.
