Abstract Details

To report visual outcomes, quality of vision, and quality of life after bilateral implantation with a single-piece bifocal diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL).

Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital

All patients underwent bilateral cataract surgery with implantation of the ZMB00 MIOL (Abbott Medical Optics) at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital. The monocular and binocular distance, intermediate (67 cm), and near visual acuity (VA) (33 cm); binocular contrast sensitivity; presence of visual symptoms and rate of spectacle independence; and quality of life were reported.

Seventy-two eyes of 36 patients were included. No intraoperative complications developed. The mean monocular uncorrected VA at distance, intermediate (67 cm), and near (30 cm) were 0.01±0.12 (standard deviation), 0.27±0.17, and 0.10±0.08, respectively. The corresponding mean values for binocular uncorrected VA were -0.05±0.09, 0.14±0.13, and 0.06±0.07,respectively. No eyes lost any corrected distance VA. The binocular contrast sensitivity remained at normal level under photopic and mesopic conditions. Twenty-one (58%) and 21 patients (58%) reported seeing halo around lights and night glare, respectively. Thirty patients (83%) reported complete spectacle independence.

Implantation of the bifocal MIOL after cataract surgery was safe and resulted in a high rate of spectacle independence.
