Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study spherical aberration influence as the origin of the focus depth and as a modifier of the clear vision range at near vision in eyes with implantation of Tecnis ZMB00 multifocal intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Miguel Servet University Hospital, Zaragoza, Spain.

Methods:

Visual performance was examined in eighty three eyes. Total high-order aberrations degree and the spherical aberration was examined for a four-millimetre pupil diameter using the KR-1W aberrometer. Visual satisfaction was analysed with the NEI-RQL-42 questionnaire. The clear vision range was stablished by the inverse of those defocus curve values which showed in the near focus peak an equal or better visual acuity than 0.1 in the LogMAR scale with the ETDRS test. It was also analysed whether it existed any concordance between the clear vision range at near vision, the spherical aberration and the patient’s visual satisfaction.

Results:

The mean age was 63.8 ± 6.14 years, visual acuity at distance vision was 0.03 ± 0.10 LogMAR. The mean field depth was 0.15 ± 0.24 meters. The highest visual acuity at near vision was 0.01 ± 0.06 measured at 0.25 ± 0.16 metres distance. The HOA were 0.14 ± 0.05 μm and the spherical aberration was -0.01 ± 0.03 μm. Global visual satisfaction was 88.64 ± 16.41 and near vision satisfaction was 86.85 ± 16.40. There were no statistically significant correlations between the spherical aberration and the near vision range or the outcomes of the satisfaction at near vision.

Conclusions:

The clear vision range at near vision with multifocal IOL is not a result of the focus depth that the spherical aberration can provide. Tecnis ZMB00 multifocal IOL provides a good clear vision range at near vision.
