Abstract Details


To compare the clinical effects of the Autologous serum (AS) and the Umbilical Cord Serum (UCS) eye drops and quantify the growing factors, vitamins and other essential molecules for the ocular surface homeostasis, in order to explore new therapies for the DES.

In the present study 64 eyes of 32 patients with severe dry eye syndrome (DES) where recruited and randomized. The scope of the present work is to assess the effect of autologous serum eye drops (AS) versus umbilical cord serum (UCS) eye drops at one and three months, measuring the following ocular surface test: Schirmer test, BUT, fluorescein staining, lissamine green staining and a questionnaire.


Most of the patients were females (86%). The mean age was 61.5 years. Both AS and UCS significantly improved the condition of the ocular surface after three months of treatment. When comparing the outcomes of both treatments for the Schirmer test, BUT and fluorescein staining, no statistically significant differences where found. The only statistically significant differences were found in the lissamine green staining, wich showed slightly better results in the SA group. There was a significant difference in the values of all the molecules in favor of the AS.


Both AS and UCS eye drops are effective for the treatment of the dry eye. UCS is not inferior to AS in the treatment of the dry eye. UCS do not contain a higher concentration of molecules compared to AS The procedure of obtaining the UCS eye drops is complicated. UCS eye drops show some advantages compared to AS eye drops
