Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the optical quality of a newly developed, aspheric IOL with another platform from the same manufacturer in a laboratory study.

Setting:

David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, University Eye Hospital Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

The aspheric C-flex 970C (Rayner, UK) has been in clinical use for some years. The 600C IOL from the same manufacturer is a newly developed IOL with an increased optic size and optimised haptic design allowing the IOL to treat patients that would receive the 970C IOL, but can also treat the larger myopic eyes. We analyzed 10 C-flex 970C and 10 600C IOLs with a power of 26D using the OptiSpheric optical bench (Trioptics, Germany). We evaluated the modulation transfer function (MTF) at 50 lp/mm and 100 lp/mm and the Strehl ratio using a 3mm and 4.5mm aperture.

Results:

At 50 lp/mm, the MTF values were 0.81/0.80 (C-flex 970C / 600C) for a 3 mm aperture and 0.59/0.67 for a 4.5 mm aperture. At 100 lp/mm, the MTF values were 0.63/0.61 for a 3 mm and 0.34/0.34 for a 4.5 mm aperture. The Strehl ratio was 0.93/0.93 for a 3 mm and 0.34/0.34 for a 4.5 mm aperture. The comparisons showed no statistically significant differences (p>0.05, Mann-Whitney-U test).

Conclusions:

The 600C is optically equivalent to the 970C IOL. Because of the increased optic size and optimised haptic design the 600C IOL can be implanted in eyes that would receive the 970C IOL, but can also treat the larger myopic eyes.
