Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the changes of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).

Setting:

Balgeun Gwangju Eye Clinic, Gwangju, South Korea

Methods:

40 eyes of twenty patients with myopia and/or astigmatism were enrolled. All underwent SMILE using VisuMax femtosecond laser (Carl ZeissMeditec AG, Jena, Germany). Suction time was extracted from treatment data. Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) (RTVue OCT-100, Optovue, Inc. Fremont, CA, USA) was used to evaluate the effects of suction on the peripapillary RNFL and GCC thickness during SMILE. The eyes were examined preoperatively and postoperatively after 1 week and 1 month

Results:

The study included 40 eyes of 20 patients. The mean age was 21.67 ± 3.40 years. The mean spherical equivalent was -4.78 ± 1.44 diopters (D) preoperatively and -0.40 ± 0.43 D at 1 months postoperatively. Mean corneal suction time was 28.89±1.28 seconds. Average RNFL thickness was 102.81 ± 15.01 μm preoperative and 102.90 ± 14.50 μm postoperative 1month (P<0.01). Average GCC thickness was 88.91 ± 3.94 μm preoperative and 88.50 ± 3.84 μm postoperative 1month (P<0.01).

Conclusions:

Increased intraocular pressure during SMILE surgery using curved interface cone does not affect the RNFL and GCC thickness 1 month after operation.
