Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual outcomes obtained with the epicristalinian intraocular lenses (IpCL, Presbyopic Implantable Contact Lens) for distance, intermediate and near vision, in patients who had previously underwent cataract surgery with monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.

Setting:

Instituto Universitario Fernández-Vega (Oviedo), Spain.

Methods:

Clinical trial, observational, longitudinal, non-randomized and prospective which enrolled 6 patients (12 eyes) who had a bilateral piggy-back implant of a diffractive IpCL lens. Mean age of the sample was 47.7 ± 7.22 years, with a range between 39 and 55. The inclusion criteria were: sphere and cylinder in the range of correction of the lens, previous lensectomy with implant of a monofocal IOL and ND:Yag capsulotomy. Refraction and distance visual acuity (DCVA) were analysed and the bilateral defocus curves were performed between -5.00 and +2.00 dioptres in steps of 0.50 D.

Results:

Data was recorded preoperatively and three months post surgery. Uncorrected distance visual acuity improved from 0.50 ± 0.42 to 0.75 ± 0.21. The calculated efficacy index was 0.83. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) remained similar in all cases, before and after surgery. The calculated safety index was 1.00. The analysis of the mean defocus curve showed a visual acuity at 66 cm. of 0.73 ± 0.27 and at 40 cm. of 0.67 ± 0.22.

Conclusions:

The diffractive IpCL implant over a monofocal IOL can be considered a viable option to improve near and intermediate vision in these cases.
