Abstract Details

Purpose:

to determine the risk factors of secondary cataract after phacoemulsification with primary posterior capsulorhexis.

Setting:

Multidisciplinary Science and Tecnology Complex Eye Microsurgery named after Academician S.N.Fyodorov Federal State Institution Novosibirsk Branch

Methods:

retrospective analysis of the data of 28 patients aged from 31 to 59 years with secondary cataract was held. All the operations were provided on the same methodic: Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation and primary posterior capsulorhexis. OCT of vitreo-lenticular interface was made in 2 years after surgery.

Results:

secondary cataract risk factors were determined: small diameter of posterior capsulorhexis (2,0-3,0 mm); lens decentration in case of not a full coverage of anterior capsulorhexis of IOL; patients of young age with intact anterior hyaloids membrane, which is like a matrix for the cell grow. There were not determined posterior capsular opacity in case of a distance between anterior boundaries of the vitreous and edges of posterior capsulorhexis in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome.

Conclusions:

There is the possibility of secondary cataract after phacoemulsification with primary posterior capsulorhexis in adult patients. The anterior hyaloid offers a scaffold for lens epithelial cells migration and regeneration. Risk factors are young age, a small diameter hole, the errors in the techniques of cataract surgery. No cases of secondary cataract in pseudoexfoliation syndrome with destruction of the anterior hyaloid
